‘On Fire’ at Thruxton Circuit
Billed as the UK’s fastest circuit Thruxton was going to be a big ask for the Krämer team, to mix it with the more powerful Supersport bikes…. but mix it they did.
Practice sessions saw both riders building up their pace, not as quickly as they had hoped, but steady progress was made. In qualifying Jenner finished in 21st and Nixon in 24th, which is not ideal for the grid, but saw both riders 1st/2nd in class.
Race one on Saturday saw Jenner finish in a respectable 16th and Nixon in 23rd overall, and maintaining the 1st/2nd in GP2. Lap times were progressing well and getting faster as the race continued, which was a positive result for the team.
After race one, the team Crew Chief, Ally Grant was unhappy with Jenner’s engine and took the decision to completely strip the engine and rebuild to his high standards, overnight. This strategy made significant improvements, as in the warm-up session on Sunday, Jenner got down to his best lap times straight away.
In Sunday’s feature race, Jenner was able to get a lap time in the 1’17 bracket, which is a competitive time overall amongst Supersport.
Unfortunately, the race started badly for Nixon, as he had to take quick action to avoid hitting a fallen rider, resulting in the bike laying down in the grass. Thankfully, Nixon was was uninjured and walked away. The bike however, was not as lucky after hitting the protected barrier at speed and catching on fire. We would like to extend our thanks to the marshals, who got to the bike quickly and extinguished the fire, minimising the damage.
Jenner continued the race well, holding 8th position overall at mid distance. His lap times were competitive amongst the Supersport bikes, showing a good turn of speed on the GP2-890RR machine - slipstreaming being the name of the game at Thruxton! Jenner found himself out of position slightly on the last lap of the race, dropping down to a creditable 10th position overall and winner of the GP2 class yet again.
Team owner Eddie Roberts comments; “Always a tough one Thruxton, but we knew from last year with Joe Collier that the GP2-890RR can mix it with some of the very best Supersport bikes. The guys chipped away, getting better each time they went out on the bikes.
The overall results in race one may not sound great, but the times were coming down and both riders did finish 1st and 2nd in the GP2 class.
Race two was run in 30 degree temperature in front of huge crowds. Overall, we had some ups and downs. We came with a target of top 10, which was achieved. I feel that the riders are really beginning to understand the handling of the bikes and finding how hard they can really push.
Special thanks to Ally and Bry for burning the midnight oil to get Owens bike refreshed, as always the team played a big part. Tony, Micky, Emma, Bryan, Sharron and Cindy thank you all for a great team effort!”
The team are heading to Cadwell Park in a couple of weeks, which is a favourite track for both riders and are positive that the GP2-890RR will preform well.
